Gold in Sri Lanka is traded primarily in four purity grades. The 22 carat standard dominates the local jewelry market because it balances purity (91.7% gold content) with the durability needed for daily-wear pieces like chains, bangles, and wedding thali. Below are today's prices for all four grades, displayed in both Pawns — the traditional Sri Lankan unit of 8 grams — and individual grams.

How We Calculate Gold Prices for Sri Lanka
Our gold prices are derived from a transparent, three-step calculation process that combines international market data with local exchange rates:
International Spot Price (LBMA)
We source the gold spot price from the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) PM fix — the global benchmark for gold pricing. Today's LBMA price: $4562.67 per troy ounce.
Currency Conversion (CBSL Rate)
We convert the USD price to Sri Lankan Rupees using the Central Bank of Sri Lanka's official indicative exchange rate. Today's rate: Rs. 301.42 per USD.
Purity Adjustment
The 24K (pure gold) price per gram is multiplied by each karat's purity factor: 22K = 91.7%, 21K = 87.5%, 18K = 75%. This gives us the accurate price for each gold purity level.

Why Gold Prices Differ Between Websites
If you check multiple sources, you'll notice different gold prices on different websites. This isn't an error — it reflects different data sources and methodologies:
CBSL Benchmark Rate
The official Central Bank rate, derived from Reuters international feed. This is the wholesale benchmark — not what consumers pay at shops.
Aggregator Rates (IdeaBeam, etc.)
Websites that aggregate data from multiple sources. May use different exchange rates, timing, or calculation methods — leading to slight variations.
Jeweller Retail Rates
What you actually pay at the shop. Includes making charges (5–25%), wastage (3–5%), and dealer margins. Always higher than market rate.
