What is 24 Carat Gold?
24 carat (24K) gold is 99.9% pure gold— the highest purity commercially available. It contains no alloy metals such as copper, silver, or zinc, making it the softest and most malleable form of gold.
24K gold displays the deepest, richest yellow color of all gold purities. Because no other metals are mixed in, the color is a warm, saturated gold that is unmistakable.
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) publishes its benchmark gold rate based on 24K purity. This makes the 24K price the foundation from which all other karat prices (22K, 21K, 18K) are derived by applying purity ratios.
- Purity: 999.9 fineness (99.9% gold)
- Karat: 24 out of 24 parts pure gold
- Alloy metals: None
- Color: Deep, rich yellow
- Primary use: Investment, central bank reserves
24K Gold: Investment vs Jewelry
Investment Products (24K)
24K gold is the standard for investment-grade products. Common formats available in Sri Lanka include:
- ✓Gold Coins— 1g, 5g, 10g, and 1 troy ounce (31.1g)
- ✓Gold Bars— 10g, 50g, 100g, and larger denominations
- ✓Sovereign Gold Certificates— paper-backed gold ownership
The CBSL benchmark rate is based on 24K gold, making it the reference standard for all gold transactions in Sri Lanka.
Why 24K Is Not Used for Jewelry
Despite being the purest form of gold, 24K is rarely used in jewelry production in Sri Lanka for practical reasons:
- ✗Too soft— easily scratched, bent, and deformed with daily wear
- ✗Cannot hold intricate designs— fine filigree and prong settings require harder alloys
- ✗Higher cost per piece— more gold content means higher price for the same weight
Sri Lankan jewelers typically use 22K (91.67% pure) or 21K (87.5% pure) gold, which offers a better balance of purity, durability, and workability.
