The Three-Step Gold Price Calculation

Gold prices in Sri Lanka are not set arbitrarily by jewellers or websites. They follow a transparent, three-step calculation that connects international gold markets to local retail prices. Every gold price you see on this site is derived from this exact process:

1

International Spot Price

The LBMA PM fix sets the global benchmark price for one troy ounce of pure gold in US Dollars.

2

Currency Conversion

The USD price is converted to Sri Lankan Rupees using the CBSL indicative exchange rate for the day.

3

Purity Adjustment

The pure gold (24K) price per gram is adjusted for the desired karat purity — 22K, 21K, or 18K.

This methodology ensures consistency and transparency. The same formula is used by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA)and major jewellers across Sri Lanka. Let's examine each step in detail.

Step 1: The International Spot Price (LBMA)

The starting point for every gold price in Sri Lanka is the LBMA Gold Price, set by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). The LBMA conducts two daily auctions — the AM fix (10:30 AM London time) and the PM fix (3:00 PM London time). The PM fix is the benchmark most widely used by gold dealers worldwide, including those in Sri Lanka.

The LBMA Gold Price is determined through an electronic auction process involving major bullion banks such as HSBC, JP Morgan, and UBS. It represents the price at which large quantities of physical gold (400-ounce Good Delivery bars) change hands on the London market. This is not a speculative or futures price — it reflects actual physical gold transactions.

Today's LBMA Spot Price

$4562.67 per troy ounce

1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams → $146.69 per gram

The LBMA price is quoted in US Dollars per troy ounce (not a regular ounce). A troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams, which is slightly heavier than the standard ounce (28.35 grams). This distinction matters because dividing by the wrong number would give an incorrect per-gram price.

Step 2: Currency Conversion (USD to LKR)

Since gold is priced internationally in US Dollars but bought and sold in Sri Lanka in Rupees, we must convert the price using the CBSL indicative exchange rate. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) publishes daily indicative exchange rates that reflect the average interbank rate for the day. For a deeper understanding of CBSL's role, see our CBSL gold rate guide.

Today's CBSL Exchange Rate

Rs. 301.42 per 1 USD

The conversion formula is straightforward:

Gold Price (LKR/gram) = (Spot Price USD / 31.1035) × USD/LKR Rate

This gives us the 24K (pure gold) price per gram in Sri Lankan Rupees. The exchange rate is a critical factor — even if the international gold price stays flat, a weakening Rupee will push local gold prices higher, and a strengthening Rupee will bring them down. This is why Sri Lankan gold prices sometimes move differently from international gold prices. Learn more about these dynamics in our guide on factors affecting gold prices in Sri Lanka.

Step 3: Purity Adjustment by Karat

Not all gold jewelry is pure. The karat system indicates the proportion of pure gold in an alloy. The 24K price per gram (calculated in Step 2) is the base rate, and lower karat prices are derived by multiplying by the purity percentage:

KaratPurityFormulaToday's Price / GramToday's Price / Pawn (8g)
24K99.9%Base rate (no adjustment)Rs. 48,520.00Rs. 388,100.00
22K91.7%24K × 0.917Rs. 44,480.00Rs. 355,850.00
21K87.5%24K × 0.875Rs. 42,460.00Rs. 339,650.00
18K75.0%24K × 0.750Rs. 36,390.00Rs. 291,120.00

In Sri Lanka, 22K gold is by far the most popular purity for jewelry, especially for wedding sets and traditional ornaments. The "916" hallmark you see stamped on jewelry indicates 91.6% purity (22 karats out of 24). Meanwhile, 24K gold is primarily used for investment bars and coins.

The pawn is a traditional Sri Lankan unit of weight equal to 8 grams. To get the per-pawn price, simply multiply the per-gram price by 8. This unit is unique to Sri Lanka and is how most local jewellers quote prices.

Live Calculation Example

Here is a complete worked example using today's actual data (April 5, 2026), showing the full calculation chain from the LBMA spot price to the final 22K per-pawn price in Sri Lankan Rupees:

Step 1: LBMA Spot Price

Gold spot price = $4562.67 per troy ounce

Step 2a: Convert to Price Per Gram (USD)

$4562.67 ÷ 31.1035 grams = $146.69 per gram

Step 2b: Convert to LKR (24K per gram)

$146.69 × Rs. 301.42 = Rs. 44,216.25 per gram (24K)

Actual published 24K rate: Rs. 48,520.00 (minor rounding differences are normal)

Step 3: Adjust for 22K Purity

Rs. 48,520.00 × 0.917 = Rs. 44,492.84 per gram (22K)

Actual published 22K rate: Rs. 44,480.00

Final: Per Pawn Price (22K)

Rs. 44,480.00 × 8 grams = Rs. 355,850.00 per pawn (22K)

This is the price you see on our homepage.

Why Our Prices May Differ from Jeweller Prices

The prices on this site represent the base gold rate — the raw material cost of the gold itself. When you buy jewelry from a shop, the final price will be higher due to several additional charges. For a comprehensive explanation, see our guide on why gold prices differ between sources.

1

Making Charges (5–15%)

This is the labour cost for crafting raw gold into jewelry. Simple designs like plain bangles have lower making charges (5–8%), while intricate designs like temple jewelry or bridal sets can have charges up to 15% or more. This is the largest component of the price difference.

2

Wastage (3–5%)

During the manufacturing process, a small amount of gold is lost as dust, filings, and polishing residue. Jewellers pass this cost on to the customer as a "wastage" charge, typically 3–5% of the gold weight.

3

Dealer Premiums

Individual jewellers add a margin above the base rate to cover their business costs — rent, staff, insurance, and profit. This premium varies by shop, location, and brand. Shops on Sea Street, Pettah, tend to have lower premiums due to high competition.

4

Timing Differences

Gold prices change throughout the day as international markets move. Our prices are based on the LBMA PM fix, while a jeweller may use a different reference time or add a buffer to protect against intraday price movements. This can create small discrepancies, especially on volatile trading days.

Bottom line: If a jeweller quotes you a 22K price significantly higher than Rs. 44,480.00 per gram today, the difference should be fully explained by making charges, wastage, and taxes on your itemized bill. If they cannot explain it, consider shopping elsewhere.

Why Our Prices May Differ from Other Websites

You may notice that different Sri Lankan gold price websites show slightly different numbers. This is normal and happens for several legitimate reasons:

1

Different Data Sources

Some websites use the LBMA PM fix (as we do), while others may use the AM fix, COMEX futures prices, or real-time spot feeds from different providers. Each source can give a slightly different number at any given time.

2

Different Update Timing

Gold prices are updated at different times across websites. Some update once daily after the LBMA fix, others update multiple times throughout the trading day. A site that updated at 10 AM may show a different price from one that updated at 3 PM.

3

Different Exchange Rates

We use the CBSL indicative rate. Other sites may use commercial bank buying/selling rates, open market rates, or previous day's rates. The difference between CBSL indicative and commercial bank selling rates can be Rs. 1–3 per USD, which compounds when multiplied by gold's high dollar price.

4

Rounding Conventions

Some sites round to the nearest Rupee, others to the nearest Rs. 10, and others show precise decimal values. These rounding differences accumulate, especially for per-pawn (8 gram) prices where a Rs. 5 per-gram rounding difference becomes Rs. 40 per pawn.

Our approach: We prioritize transparency and consistency. All our prices use the LBMA PM fix and CBSL indicative exchange rate, updated daily. This methodology page explains exactly how every number on our site is derived, so you can verify our calculations independently.
