Understanding the Data
The gold prices displayed on this page are derived from two authoritative sources:
LBMA Gold Price (International)
The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) publishes the global benchmark gold price twice daily. We use the PM (afternoon) fix, which is the most widely referenced price for gold trading worldwide. This price is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce.
CBSL Exchange Rate (Local)
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) publishes the indicative USD/LKR exchange rate daily. This rate is used to convert the international gold price from US dollars to Sri Lankan rupees. Changes in this exchange rate directly impact the local gold price, even when the international price remains stable.
Methodology: The price per gram for 24K (pure) gold is calculated by converting the LBMA troy ounce price to grams (1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams) and applying the CBSL exchange rate. Prices for 22K (91.67% purity), 21K (87.5% purity), and 18K (75% purity) are derived by applying the respective purity percentages. The pawn price is simply the per-gram rate multiplied by 8.
Important:These are indicative market rates. Actual retail prices at jewelry shops include making charges (5–15%), wastage (3–5%), and dealer premiums. When selling gold, buyback rates are typically 2–5% below the market rate.
